Position Description:

UOWD is currently seeking applications to fill the position  of Civil Engineering Lab Engineer (Full Time Permanent) with the Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences. 

The position of Lab Engineer, Civil Laboratories (Construction, Soil, structures, Concrete, Hydraulic) exists to manage and support the functioning and development of labs across different disciplines within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. Ideally, the Lab Engineer position is suitable for applicants who are looking to gain experience to develop their scholarly career.

 

The position holder will be responsible for:

  • Manages and supports the proper functioning and development of the Engineering Laboratories comprising the Fluid lab, Solids Lab, Construction and Soil lab, Concrete Lab, Surveying lab.

  • Directs the preparation of lab experiments as advised by the course professor, coordinates the set-up of required tools, and ensures calibration and proper functioning of equipment.

  • Instructs and demonstrates to students the proper techniques in lab safety, and use and operation of lab equipment.

  • Assists faculty and graduate student in conducting research experiments, and helps undergraduate students in doing their course and final-year projects.

  • Takes initiatives to design new experiments or find inexpensive solutions for getting robust test results

  • Contacts occasionally with outside suppliers and contractors when performing equipment maintenance and repair, and when ordering equipment and/or parts.

 

Essential & Desirable Criteria:
  • Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil engineering or closely related field.
  • Two years’ previous experience in the theoretical and practical application of Civil engineering laboratory techniques

ESSENTIAL

  • Minimum qualification, Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil engineering or closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Two years previous experience in the theoretical and practical application of Civil engineering Laboratory techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • A commitment to Values of Passion, Courage, Integrity, Exceptional, Collaboration and Creativity
  • Excellent communication skills in English (writing and speaking)
  • Good knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, and CAD tools

 DESIRABLE

  • Experience with undergraduate Engineering laboratory setup and management.
  • Preferably holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
